The front aspect is intimidating but it is the rear aspect that demands respect. However, Vauxhal and Lotus are keen to point out that form has closely followed function.
The wheels for example were required to clear the 330mm front brake discs and AP Racing four pot calipers derived from group C use. The wheels are 8.5 x 17" at the front with 235/45 ZR17 Goodyear Eagles specially developed for the car. The back rims are an inch wider and carry 265/40 ZR17 Eagles.
Aerodynamic additions include the boot spoiler and airdams. Developed in Opel's wind tunnel, they combine to provide high speed stability with zero lift. Although the front end styling was tempered with cooling requirements. Subsequently, space and ducting had to be provided for a water radiator, intercooler, air conditioner and a pair of oil coolers.
The engine has been produced to comply with US83 and Swiss emission regulations. These are better than exsisting European regs in keeping with GM's policy and to prove the car is environmentally friendly. With its twin closed loop catalytic converters, the Carlton obviously runs unleaded. Maximum performance is delivered on 98 Ron but it can run on any grade of fuel. However, 95 Ron fuel will sacrifice 30 - 40bhp.
The twin turbos 3.6 litre capacity and 24v head combine to produce 377bhp 5200rpm. Ahead of the projected 100bhp per litre. It is made enjoyable by 419lbft of torque at 4200rpm with 300lbft at 2000rpm, reflecting a flat friendly curve.
Nine years later there is still no production saloon that comes close to the 178mph 0 - 100 10 secs Lotus Carlton.
